Anybody but Anna

One of the benefits of our recent move is that my wife and I are now eligible to vote against Lane County Commissioner Anna Morrison.

The local conservaBloggers have all been repeating the same tired shtick about how important it is to keep Morrison in the West Lane County Commisson seat because … umm, well, I can’t quite figure it out.

Look, I’m not going to pretend to be a big fan of Morrison opponent Bill Fleenor. His biggest selling point is that he’s not Anna Morrison. He’s running as an independent, but sounds pretty damn Republican to me. And his “I CARE about local families” spiel in his radio spots is faintly nauseating.

But Morrison, the incumbent, is probably the worst local elected official currently in office, easily outdistancing fellow commissioner Bobby Greene and Springfield Mayor Sid Leiken.

She has earned a ZERO rating from the Oregon League of Conservation Voters and has an extensive track record of being dismissive and rude to constituents with the temerity to actually speak at Commission hearings. She recently voted to end the county’s policy of using pesticides to control roadside weeds only as a last resort, and she ignored the will of her constituents in Florence on the sale of a large piece of public land there.

Bill Fleenor ran a tepid campaign last time around, but is much better organized this time. Still, he faces an uphill battle as Morrison is well-funded by timber and development interests. Frankly, it’s too bad there isn’t a better opponent to run against her, but it’s difficult to see how anyone could be worse in that seat.

If there isn’t a quality candidate to oppose her, why don’t you run? If I lived in your area, I’d vote for you!!

Thanks, Trey. I knew I could count on your vote. :)

Somehow, I doubt “Anarchist hippie eco-freak for county commission” would make for a winning campaign slogan.

It’s all about marketing, dude! Look, even Kevin Hornbuckle (a declared Communist) got himself elected to the Eugene City Council several years back. If an avowed Communist can get elected, why not an ““Anarchist hippie eco-freak”?
